Admission process has been implemented in order to assess and select students who want to join School of Symphonic Music of Pérez Zeledón. The process is carried out every November; those students who result selected start class on March of next year.
Admission process has two phases:
First phase
A. Headship assigns different admission committees which will apply the aptitude test to all interested kids (from 6 to 12 years old).
B. This committee is made up of 3 people, among them: professors, assistants, and / or board of directors as required.
C. The test is divided into three sections: rhythm, melody, and coordination. Each one will be assessed from 1 to 10 separately.
D. The committee has full autonomy on making decisions about who will continue to the next phase.
E. Admission Committee is in charge of planning, organizing, executing, supervising, and assessing every step within the process. Also, at the end of this, they will present a final report to the Academic Headship, who will review, approve and disclose official results.
Second phase
A. Once overcome the first phase, all admitted students must take a 15 day introductory course in which they will learn about the basics of musical reading.
B. The course will be taught by professors and assistants assigned by the headship.
C. Professors and assistants in charge of introductory course will assess students on a daily basis in rhythm, melody, and coordination areas. The evaluation will be done as follows: personal behavior 10%, attendance 10%, class work 40%, and assessment 40%.
D. At the end of the 15 day course, the students will take an individual test with a judge assigned by headship. The judge will assess the student’s performance in the course. If the student obtains the average grade of 80% (including personal behavior, attendance, class work, and the assessment), he or she will be considered admitted to the School.
E. All students’ grades will be analyzed by a round table made up of the professors of the course and the board of directors. Those students who obtain less than 80%, and which deficiency is related to melody, but good rhythm aptitude, will be considered for the Development of Instrumental Music Program, in the case that the School has admission capacity.
F. Test grades will be handed in to the parents of the students in person the next day of the test execution. Also, they will be called to the first meeting for parents the same day.
G. As soon as the students approve the test, they become regular students of the institution. Hence, they must be part of the activities scheduled.
H. The student who does not show up to perform the test will lose the opportunity to take it later on, unless there is a major reason to justify the absence.
